Trini nature reminds me of home. It looks fairly similar in terms of flora & fauna but of course there are some differences. For example our rivers look brown & not blue. I’ve also noticed that Trinidad is still a underrated vacation destination, especially for Surinamese people. I wanted to change that and in the time I’ve been here I’ve done a lot of exploring.
In this blog, post I want to tell you about 1 of my trips. I went to Toco with RSJ Tours & Adventures and it was amazing! Keep reading to see more.

Where to book the tours
First thing’s first. Let’s talk about where you can book the tours to visit the places I’m going to talk about in the rest of this blog post.
RSJ Tours & Adventures is a tour company run by Rondell who is a fun & knowledgeable guide. He not only takes you to some beautiful spots but also tells you about various plants & the history of the places along the way. 5 nature spots to visit in & around Toco
- Rampanalgas waterfalls: these are 2 cascading segments of a river that runs along the back of Rampanalgas village. The hike to these falls is about a 15 minute walk through the forest, accessed from inside the village. The lower pool is quite deep and not recommended for non-swimmers while the upper pool is wide, shallow and is a great option for non-swimmers.
- Balandra basin: this is a pretty moderate hike, going mainly uphill until the trail takes you to the top of the small cascade. This hike is definitely recommended for first timers.
- Mermaid pool: according to a local myth, this pool got its name from hunters who claimed to have actually seen mermaids here. Mermaid pool is absolutely beautiful, and its cold waters are a welcome refresher after the hike to get there.
- Matelot falls: this tour is highly recommended if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Matelot village is home to beautiful scenery, beaches, rivers & waterfalls.
- La Foret beach: getting here is a bit challenging but when you do, the views take your breath away.

As a traveler with a Surinamese passport the whole trip here was pretty easy. I came without any plan, without any itinerary, with the intention of writing blogs and making my own guide for the people who get inspired by my content to visit Trinidad.
